Queens Award for Enterprise 2016

Picture1A charity dedicated to supporting bereaved military families have won The Queens Award for Enterprise 2016 in the Innovation category.

The Queens Award for Enterprise is the most prestigious business award in the UK and has been awarded to the charity for their innovative approach to supporting bereaved military families and for becoming a self-funded organisation.

Founded by father and son partnership Bill and Billy McCance the charity has a national support team supporting approximately 80 families per year and is funded by its 22 shops throughout the UK.

Forces Support provides families with Remembrance areas, children’s play areas and playrooms, garden and household maintenance and has currently an eight month waiting list.

The charity now only in its sixth year has supported over 90 of the 457 families who have lost a loved one in Afghanistan and over 300 families over the past five years.

Dedicated to research they commissioned the first ever bereaved military families scoping study in the UK from which a paper was published. They have also recently had a paper published in ‘Death Studies’ one of the world’s two largest bereavement journals reporting on their unique type of restorative coping support which has received a huge amount of interest internationally.

Upon hearing the news, Bill said “We are overwhelmed and honoured at receiving the Queens award and my son and I are very excited to be attending Buckingham Palace as the founders of Forces Support in July this year”.

Billy McCance, Bill’s son said “”It is heart-warming and satisfying that the charity is getting this recognition. It is an absolute honour and a privilege to be recognised by the Queens award for enterprise, especially as we carry out such a satisfying service for the families of our fallen heroes”

Nichola Bruno, The Secretary, The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, said “The Queen’s Award provides the country with an opportunity to celebrate enterprise and encourage business excellence in the UK”.

Later in the year, the Lord-Lieutenant of the County, The Queens local representative, presents the Grant of Appointment and a presentational crystal bowl to winners at a special Awards ceremony.

The charity is actively seeking large retail properties through England, Scotland and Wales and sites for its clothing recycling banks in the North East of England, please get in touch if you can help.
